This Privacy Policy explains how Quartal collects, uses, shares, and protects personal information when you use Quartal.io, our web application, and related services.
We refer to these together as the "Service."

1. Information we collect
The information we collect depends on how you use Quartal.
Account information
When you create an account or join a workspace, we may collect information such as:
- Your name
- Email address
- Profile photo
- Authentication information
- Vocal part, instrument, or musical role
- Workspace role
- Account and workspace preferences
If you sign in through a third-party authentication provider, such as Google, we receive the information that provider makes available to us based on your authorization and its policies.
Workspace and member information
When you create or participate in a workspace, we may collect:
- Workspace name
- Workspace URL or slug
- Your role in the workspace
- Member and invitation information
- Email addresses used to invite members
- Workspace settings and practice preferences
- Songs and other content associated with the workspace
Other members may be able to see certain profile and workspace information according to their permissions.
Music and uploaded content
When you use Quartal, you may upload or provide:
- PDFs
- Photographs or images
- MusicXML or MXL files
- Audio recordings
- Videos
- Sheet music
- Music charts
- Song titles and metadata
- Other rehearsal materials
We process this content to provide Quartal's rehearsal features.
This may include creating or storing structured musical information, scores, playback data, vocal parts, instrumental views, tablature, fingerings, or other materials derived from the source you provided.
Usage and device information
When you use Quartal, we may automatically collect information such as:
- Pages and features you use
- Songs or workspaces you interact with
- Dates and times of activity
- Browser and device type
- Operating system
- IP address
- Approximate location derived from IP address
- Log data
- Error and diagnostic information
- Authentication and security events
- Product settings and preferences
We may use cookies, local storage, and similar technologies for authentication, security, preferences, product functionality, and analytics.
Communications
If you contact us, participate in the pilot, submit feedback, or communicate with Quartal, we may collect your contact information and the contents of those communications.
2. How we use information
We use information to operate and improve Quartal.
This includes using information to:
- Create and manage accounts
- Authenticate users
- Create and manage workspaces
- Send and process workspace invitations
- Store and organize songs
- Process musical source material
- Create interactive rehearsal materials
- Provide playback, vocal, piano, bass, and other practice features
- Save preferences
- Provide customer support
- Send important account and service communications
- Understand how Quartal is used
- Diagnose errors and improve reliability
- Improve the accuracy and usefulness of Quartal's features
- Protect accounts and prevent abuse
- Enforce our Terms of Service
- Comply with legal obligations
- Develop and improve the Service
We may also use aggregated or de-identified information for analytics, research, product development, and service improvement.
3. How uploaded music is used
Your uploaded music is used to provide the Quartal features you request.
For example, we may process an uploaded score, image, recording, or video so Quartal can create a structured version of the music and provide rehearsal tools around it.
We may also use information about how these systems perform, including errors, corrections, diagnostics, and usage patterns, to maintain and improve Quartal.
We do not claim ownership of the music you upload.
Your rights and responsibilities regarding uploaded content are described in our Terms of Service.
4. How we share information
We do not sell your personal information.
We may share information in the following circumstances.
With members of your workspace
Quartal is a collaborative product.
Information such as your name, profile photo, musical role, workspace role, and other workspace information may be visible to other authorized members of the same workspace.
Content placed in a shared workspace may be available to members who have permission to access it.
With service providers
We use companies that help us operate Quartal.
These providers may support functions such as:
- Cloud hosting
- File storage
- Authentication
- Email delivery
- Music processing
- Database services
- Security
- Error monitoring
- Analytics
- Infrastructure
These providers may process information on our behalf to perform services for Quartal.
For legal and safety reasons
We may disclose information when we reasonably believe it is necessary to:
- Comply with law, regulation, subpoena, court order, or legal process
- Respond to lawful government requests
- Protect the rights, safety, and security of Quartal, our users, or others
- Investigate fraud, abuse, security incidents, or violations of our Terms
- Establish, exercise, or defend legal claims
Business transfers
If Quartal is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, bankruptcy, sale of assets, or similar business transaction, information may be transferred as part of that transaction.
Any successor's handling of personal information will remain subject to applicable law.
5. Email and service communications
We may send emails related to:
- Account access
- Magic-link authentication
- Workspace invitations
- Membership changes
- Security
- Product changes
- Support requests
- Important Service notices
- The Quartal pilot
Some messages are necessary to operate your account and cannot be opted out of while you continue using the relevant feature.
If we send optional marketing emails, you may unsubscribe using the instructions in those messages.
6. Data retention
We keep personal information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the Service, maintain your account, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, enforce agreements, and protect the security of Quartal.
Retention periods can vary depending on the type of information and why we collected it.
When you delete content or an account, it may take time for copies to disappear from backups and other systems.
We may retain limited information when required by law or reasonably necessary for security, fraud prevention, dispute resolution, or enforcing our agreements.
Information associated with a shared workspace may also remain where another user or organization controls that workspace and has an independent reason to retain it.
7. Your choices and rights
You can manage certain information directly through Quartal.
Depending on available product controls, you may be able to:
- Update your name or profile
- Change musical role or instrument information
- Manage workspace settings
- Leave a workspace
- Delete songs or other content you control
- Delete eligible workspaces
- Delete your account
You may also email hello@quartal.io to request help accessing, correcting, or deleting personal information associated with your account.
Depending on where you live, applicable privacy law may give you additional rights, such as the right to:
- Know or access personal information we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate personal information
- Request deletion
- Obtain a portable copy of certain information
- Restrict or object to certain processing
- Opt out of certain types of data sharing or targeted advertising
- Appeal a decision concerning a privacy request
These rights are subject to applicable legal exceptions.
We may need to verify your identity before completing a request.
You may also authorize another person to submit a request where applicable law permits it.
We will not discriminate against you for exercising privacy rights provided by law.
8. Cookies and similar technologies
Quartal may use cookies, browser storage, and similar technologies to:
- Keep you signed in
- Protect your account
- Remember product preferences
- Maintain application functionality
- Understand usage
- Diagnose errors
- Improve the Service
Your browser may allow you to restrict cookies or clear stored information.
Disabling certain technologies may prevent parts of Quartal from working correctly.
9. Security
We use administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, alteration, or disclosure.
No online service can guarantee perfect security.
You are also responsible for protecting your account credentials and for controlling who you invite to your workspaces.

10. Children
Quartal is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13 through ordinary account registration.
Users must be at least 13 years old to create or use a Quartal account.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child under 13 has provided personal information to Quartal, contact hello@quartal.io so we can investigate and take appropriate action.
Organizations should not invite children under 13 to create Quartal accounts unless Quartal has expressly approved an arrangement designed to comply with applicable children's privacy requirements.
11. International users
Quartal is operated from the United States.
If you use Quartal from another country, your information may be transferred to, stored in, or processed in the United States or other countries where our service providers operate.
Those countries may have data protection laws different from the laws where you live.
Where required, we will use appropriate mechanisms for international transfers of personal information.
12. Third-party links and services
Quartal may contain links to third-party websites or may interact with third-party services.
This Privacy Policy does not control how independent third parties handle information.
You should review their privacy policies before providing them with personal information.
13. Changes to this Privacy Policy
Quartal will continue to evolve, and this Privacy Policy may change as our product and practices change.
If we make material changes, we will provide reasonable notice through Quartal, by email, or through another appropriate method.
The effective date at the top will show when this policy was last updated.
